Dalarna is a historical province in central Sweden. It is mainly located around the rivers Österdalälven and Västerdalälven which joints into Dalälven. The province is mainly covered by mainly coniferous forests (Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies). Most parts of the forests are sins several hundred years used for coal and timber production as well as pasturage. In the central and northern part many medieval timber houses are preserved, the oldest known ones from 13'th century.

Dendrochronological subregions

The altitudes are from 55 m a.s.l. up to far above the tree line (about 900 m). Dendrochronologically this means there are at least three main regions:

55-150 m

Almost no dendrochronological measurements available from this area. Samples will probably best correlate towards Mälardalen area and chronologies from the rest of the great plain areas.

150-450 m

A huge amount of samples and local chronologies available from resent times and whole the second millennium[1]. This depends of a rather conservative building style and a unbroken tradition of knuttimring (log cabin style), still going on into 20'th century, and a lot of dendrochronological investigations have been done.

Problems: Typically in this area is a low correlation between PISY and PCAB, and a rather low correlation between bog pines and ordinary pine chronologies.

450-900 m

The very northwestern part. Some chronologies mainly based on living trees available, but they correlates very well towards the rest of the inland of northern Sweden.
